The Knockan nature trail is a great way to find out why the land in this part of northwest Scotland looks the way it does. The trail will show you a series of habitats - the natural homes of plants and animals - ranging from a simple bare rock face through to a relic of the forest which was present in this area until some 4000 years ago.
Most of the trail provides fairly easy walking, especially along the top of the cliff from where, on a clear day you can enjoy magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. However, the climb up to the top is steep and quite strenuous.
Many visitors to this part of Scotland hope to catch sight of a golden eagle or red deer. These have been seen from the trail, but they are wary creatures and so you will require a certain amount of luck, especially when large numbers are present during the summer tourist season.
Things to remember:
- Wear stout shoots or boots
- Keep to the path and take care
- Do not remove specimens of plants or rocks
- Put all litter in the car park bins
- Avoid all risk of fire
