Self Catering Holidays for Families in the North West of Scotland
Windyhill is a great base for your family holiday. The self catering home its self has open plan living on the 1st floor with fantastic views overlooking the Summer Isles. It's well equipped with all you need for those days spent indoors, games, books, videos, cd's & a telescope. For families with young children there is a cot, highchair & stair gate provided. The garden is completely enclosed with room to play on the grass.
Surrounding Windyhill is the most fantastic scenery. Altan Dhu has a scattering of houses & crofts with sheep roaming freely. At the bottom of the drive there are usually a couple of pigs. Within walking distance is the Summer Isles Smokehouse and next to that is a croft selling fresh eggs and home grown salad. Still within walking distance is the local pub. They do great freshly cooked food and are very child friendly.
The local shop is situated in Polbain which is a coupe of miles away. Here you can purchase pretty much most things and they are more than happy to deliver your shopping to Windyhill in ready ness for your arrival. Also in Polbain is a craft shop and tea room.
As you travel further along towards Achiltibuie you reach the pier at Badentarbet. Here you can catch the Hectoria for a trip round the Summer Isles. It sails twice a day, 10.30am & 2.15pm. Many species of seabirds can be seen and usually seals. If you're lucky you sometimes see porpoises. children friendly self cateringThey stop for 1 hour on one of the Islands you can see from Windyhill. At the time of writing this Adults cost £18 & Children under 16 £9. Infants & dogs are free. Make sure you take cash with you as they don't accept cards.The trip is great for the kids, don't forget your binoculars, remember the weather can be changeable so advise you take windproof jacket & make sure you take insect repellent for the island stop as the midges may be out. The scenery is great though and the trip doesn't last too long for kids to get bored.
In Achiltibuie there is a post office which has a selection of DVD's available.summer isles There is also a shop where you can buy fuel for the fire as well as petrol. The renowned Summer Isle hotel is here. If you want to sample their food (which is great) suggest you eat in the bar. They start serving from 5.30pm which is nice and early if you have young children. They don't have highchairs so don't forget to take our travel one from Windyhill. Next to the Summer Isles Hotel is the Hydropondicum (see Achiltibuie page) which has a cafe.
One of the best beaches in the area is just a couple of miles away. You'll see it as you drive to Windyhill. Achnahaird. This beach has lovely soft pink sand. With a back drop of Stac Pollaidh and surrounding mountains. The ocean has a lovely blue/green tint. Lots of rock pools for the kids to explore.

If you want to travel further a field try Knocken Crag. This has a visitors centre with displays for the kids showing how the geology of the area was formed. Also the road to Loch Inver is a mini adventure. At Kincraig you can park up and walk the 2 miles to the falls. The walk is quite easy going with a well marked path. At the start there is a cafe and book shop. Loch Inver itself has many places to visit. The community woods are great with many paths leading to small secluded beaches. For lunch try The Pie shop.
