With Christmas behind us, as the New Year kicks in, the short, dark days of January can seem more than a little gloomy. So what better time of year to plan your next holiday? And if you’re hoping to get away sooner rather than later in the year, there are many reasons why a spring break in Scotland makes perfect sense.

As this part of the world shrugs off its wintry blanket and spring begins to make itself felt, Scotland is just crying out to be explored! The post-winter landscape is one in which spring flowers from daffodils and snowdrops to bluebells are out in force, making a stunning backdrop.

The Snowdrop Festival runs until March 15 2015, after kicking off in late January. Many venues across the land open their gardens during this time to celebrate this beautiful flower. April and May can be far warmer north of the border than you may have realised. And if you like your holidays active, the milder weather and longer days are ideal for everything from golf to hiking and biking.

If you fancy doing some hill walking but are new to it, you will be far better off doing your first walks in the spring. The Scottish mountains can be very unforgiving when there’s a lot of snow and ice around. What’s more, especially if you are able to avoid main school breaks like Easter and the May half term, you will be well placed to make the most of all of Scotland’s many tourist attractions without the summer crowds. Edinburgh in August at the time of the Festival is, of course, extremely busy. But spring is the perfect time to explore all that Scotland’s wonderful cities have to offer.

However, if you do need to take your holidays in term time, and fancy self-catering Scotland will still have accommodation available – you just need to book up a little further ahead.

With so any things to do in Scotland, and such a wide range of self-catering holiday homes to choose from, plan your spring break north of the border now.
